Disk Check on Windows Server 2008 Backup Drive

Question:

We have Windows Server 2008 Standard setup to run full backups to an external USB hard drive.  There is a bad block on this drive.  Since this drive has been setup for backup, the disk management will not run to check for errors.  I was unable to find any documentation on how to perform this action on the disk without formatting it and then running the disk check.  We are look to preserve the backed up data.

Solution:

Windows Server 2008 Backup will create unmounted volume on the target disk.  This is why it has been difficult for us to run a chkdsk on this target disk.  Turns out you can run the “wbadmin” utility from a command prompt to run chkdsk.

Thanks for your thoughts.
