Server SBS 2008 Terminal server licensing and configuration
Question:
Hi,
We have just done our first SBS 2008 Standard install. All is fine except for Terminal Services.
It seems only domain admins can login. When a user tries to logon it gets denied saying “user must be a menber of Remote desktop users…” They all are.
TS is installed on the server.
MS also mentioned in this article that TS needs to run on a second server. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd262139(WS.10).aspx
Is this true? in that case does SBS standard come with the 2nd server? I though only premium does.
Also since there is no license manager built in anyomre. do we still need to install TS CALs somehow?
I hope this makes sense and does not sound very stupid. Just trying to find our way in the MS licencing maze.
Thanks
Solution:
If you choose to use Hyper-V, all machines on that physical box have to be virtual (other than the host) SBS Premium comes with an SBS 2008 license, a Server 2008 std license, and a SQL license. The server 2008 std license can actually be used twice. Once as a Server 2008 std Hyper-V host (no services running, just a host), and secondly as a basic 2008 server to run SQL and/or terminal services.
In this situation normally both SBS 2008 and Server 2008 std are run as virtual machines on the same box/host.
The other common scenareo is to run SBS 2008 on one physical box and Server 2008 std on another, though you could virtualize one or the other on it’s own Hyper -V host but there is little advantage.
There are a couple of limitations to keep in mind.
-Hyper-V cannot be run on SBS. I.e. SBS cannot be the Hyper-V host. It can be a host if you use virtual server 2005 or VMWare server
-Terminal Services cannot be run on SBS, other than for administration purposes, and is enabled by default. (1 user only and as a domain admin)
I hope this helps, I know it is confusing. Glad to answer more questions if you need more clarification or details.
