Unable to format new 320gb hd (set as slave) in desktop

Question:
I installed a new Seagate 320Gb drive for storage use in my pc. I have Windows WP pro. In Disk management, I tried to format the drive in a variety of ways (ie one large partition or 3 smaller partitions).
I can create on partition of about 100GB and format as NTFS, but no matter how big I try to make an additional partition, it gives an error “the format did not complete successfully”
Any ideas?
It is a system I assembled myself about 3 years ago, Intel 845PESS board and intel P4 2ghz.
Solution:
It seems that your motherboard’s controller can’t handle the large size drives, so I think the PCI IDE card is the way to go.
