win98 se freezes at desktop
Question:
I have IBM NetVista and have 98se installed on it and I am using it as a server for my bussiness, connected to (2) work stations they are NetVistas also) they run fine. These units are NOT connected to the internet. It will boot up as far as the desktop but never completes, then it stops and freezs there. It will boot up and run in safe mode but that is it. I have win 98 in a folder labeled : Win 98_cabs but I am afraid that I might loose all current data .
The program that I run goes through a DOS window. Sometimes when I try to reboot it will do it 2 or 3 times before it finally boots then again freezes. this also happens when I boot to safe mode(not the freeze there). the Hard drive is 6 to 7 years old and is a MAXTOR. I am at my wits end the CD rom does not work so I can’t use my disk to try a repair.Safemode is too limited. Also I am by no means an expert at this kind of thing so any explanations will have to be SIMPLE CLEAR AND PRECISE.
Sorry to make this difficult for you but it is a small business with a client base of 2000 or more
Solution:
Does the CTRL+ALT+DEL bring the window with the running application list, when the computer is frozen?
Are all the desktop elements visible?
Does the mouse cursor move?
