Windows Mobile 2005 ActiveSync with Exchange Server – GPRS works fine, but internet doesn’t!

Question:

Hello. Using Windows Mobile 2005 outlook mobile access to sync my MDA Vario II to my Exchange 2003 at home. Just gone through the GoDaddy certificate install process onto IIS on my server. My Vario (when using GPRS) successfully does a server activesync between my pda and my Exchange. BUT, when using desktop passthrough (i.e. when pda connected to pc via USB) or when using my PDA’s wifi (to access my home network’s broadband connection) there is a failure to sync.
Tapping sync on the pda’s activesync screen brings up the “Synchronising Folders” comments under Exchange Server, but then it stops, with a message at the bottom saying “Waiting for network”.
The error code is 80072EFD.
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/exchange_errors.php says that this is a network connectivity problem.
Any ideas as to how to solve this? As mentioned, if I disable wireless and just use GPRS syncing with the server works fine!
Cheers

Solution:

In the properties of your WiFi connection, is it set that this connection connects to the Internet or My Workplace?  It should be set to Internet if you are wanting it to work from your home to sync with your work server.

Also, I am assuming that when you sync with GPRS that you are using a public DNS record such as webmail.myhome.com
Can you access this same address from inside the network?  If this address is not accessible from inside your network then that would be the cause. You need an internal DNS record that matches it and points to the same server.

When you use GPRS you are going through the public Internet and accessing a public IP but inside your network, with ActiveSync or WiFi, you don’t need to go outside your network just to come back in.
